DESCRIPTION: Numbers 22:29. "And Balaam said unto the ass," etc.] It may appear a difficulty that Balaam heard the ass speak, that he was not too much surprised and astonished to make such answers to the ass. But the difficulty may be resolved thus. Balaam, being a soothsayer or diviner, and a very great and famous heathen prophet or conjurer (though on this occasion he received revelations from God), he was not unused to extraordinary appearances and voices, but doubtless more used to them than less noted magicians. It was not an unusual thing for heathen magicians to converse with spirits and hear their voices, appearing to them in the shape of birds and beasts, and probably sometimes speaking out of such animals, as the devil at first spoke out of the serpent, which might be the cause that Balaam might not be so much frightened at so extraordinary a thing. And if it was yet different on some respects from what he had been used to, no wonder he did not turn that much in his thoughts in the heat of passion. - WJE 24:273
