DESCRIPTION: That the heathen philosophers and poets affected to be thought inspired, and to write and speak from a divine afflatus, seems to be from hence: that those ancient wise men, from whom they had the most divine and excellent parts of their wisdom by tradition, had their wisdom by inspiration. The tradition they were so busy in pursuit of, in their traveling to and fro to gather them up, were traditions from the ancient, inspired, holy fathers of the nations of the world, and patriarchs of the church of God. That these doctrines were at first given by inspiration from God, was the cause that they were looked upon sacred, and the keeping of them was looked upon as the special business of the priests. - WJE 20:225
