COMMONPLACE NOTES

DESCRIPTION

Edwards says that the thousand years of Revelation 20 must be taken literally, for if they are to be understood figuratively, then a much longer period of time is implied. Scripture prophecy often uses smaller time frames to represent longer ones; for instance, a day is a year, a week is seven years, a month is thirty years, and a year is 360 years. Thus, if the thousand years of Revelation 20 is to be interpreted symbolically, it likely signifies a much greater span of time than a literal thousand years, as a thousand years appears long to humans. Similarly, a day, an hour, and a moment are perceived as very brief, and are thus used to refer to any short period of time, such as the brevity of human life. (See WJE 20:50-52 for his eight reasons)
